The subject of my work can vary from realistic scenes, to simple cartoon figures and is dictated by my emotional desire to express my inner self. The more personal and emotionally exposing my work is, the more powerful the final experience is for me. I choose my subjects by guttural urge, meaning that I am often struck by a thought or an experience that will spark an image in my mind and I will have a burning feeling in my chest like new love, wanting to put this image down some how as a visual token of my inspirations.

Though I consider myself a painter, and introduce myself as such when shaking hands, my work is not limited to just this one medium. I like to use all the skills in my artist’s toolbox to express myself. This is particularly true in my smaller works where I like to mix mediums based on their visual impact. Words such as depth, intensity, and texture are strong stepping-stones for me and I use paint, found material, printmaking and drawing to insert these concepts into my pieces.

In my current projects, I am continuing to explore my personal dramas and understanding of our world. My new work has moved away from the desire for realism and towards the brushwork of wet on wet, where a simple stroke of color can represent a whole world of true life; where the immediacy and psychological connection to the piece is expressed through what I call my speed painting. I have begun to combine found materials such as metal and printed papers, and use their unaltered beauty as a background for my social commentary. I have been using my own image in my work because it is through my eyes and my experiences that I view life. And, it is my hope that when people see my paintings, that they serve as a spring board of understanding to compel them to think of their own humans experience and how different, yet the same we all are.
